Planning to hike Mount Rinjani in Lombok? Choosing the right time is one of the most important parts of preparing for your adventure.
At Eddie Rinjani Trekking, we believe that a great Rinjani experience is not only about reaching the summit. It is also about choosing the right season, understanding the mountain conditions, and preparing properly for the journey.
Mount Rinjani stands at 3,726 meters above sea level and offers some of the most spectacular mountain scenery in Indonesia — from the sunrise at the summit to the turquoise waters of Segara Anak Lake and the dramatic landscapes of Torean.
But when is the best time to hike Mount Rinjani?
The Best Season to Hike Mount Rinjani
In general, the dry season from April to October is considered the most favorable period for trekking Mount Rinjani.
During this period, rainfall is generally lower, trails are usually drier, and visibility can be better. These conditions can make the trek more comfortable, especially for trekkers planning to reach the summit.
However, mountain weather is unpredictable. Even during the dry season, rain, strong winds, and cold temperatures can occur.
That is why at Eddie Rinjani Trekking, we always recommend preparing for changing mountain conditions rather than relying only on the season.
April – The Start of the Trekking Season
April marks the beginning of the main trekking season.
The landscape can still look beautifully green after the rainy season, while the weather gradually becomes drier.
Some parts of the trail may still be wet or muddy, and occasional rain is possible.
Why choose April?
- Beautiful green scenery
- Fewer visitors compared with peak season
- Good option for travelers who prefer a quieter experience
- Suitable for private trekking
May – June: One of Our Favorite Periods
May and June are excellent months for hiking Mount Rinjani.
The weather is generally becoming more stable, while the mountain scenery remains beautiful and fresh.
For trekkers who want a combination of good weather, beautiful landscapes, and a more comfortable trekking experience, these months are worth considering.
They are also excellent for photography, especially when the sky is clear around sunrise and sunset.
Our recommendation: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
July – August: High Season on Rinjani
July and August are among the busiest months for Mount Rinjani trekking.
The weather is generally dry, and many international travelers visit Lombok during this period.
The advantage is a higher chance of clear mountain views. The downside is that the mountain can be considerably busier.
If you plan to trek during high season, we strongly recommend booking your trek and accommodation in advance.
Expect:
- More trekkers on popular routes
- Busier campsites
- Higher demand for trekking services
- Limited availability during popular dates
If you prefer a more private and relaxed experience, a private trek with Eddie Rinjani Trekking can be a great option.
September – October: A Great Alternative
September and October are also excellent periods for trekking Mount Rinjani.
The weather can remain favorable while visitor numbers may begin to decrease compared with the July–August peak.
For travelers looking for a balance between good trekking conditions and a more peaceful mountain experience, this can be an excellent choice.
It is also a great period for private trips, couples, and small groups.
Our recommendation: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
November – December: Weather Starts to Change
From November, rainfall generally becomes more frequent as the wet season approaches.
Trekking may still be possible when the official trekking routes are open, but conditions can become less predictable.
Rain can make some trails slippery and more challenging, particularly on steep sections.
January – March: Mount Rinjani Is Closed
Mount Rinjani is officially closed for trekking from January to March.
During this period, trekking activities are not permitted as the mountain is closed by the Mount Rinjani National Park Authority (TNGR).
The annual closure is implemented for reasons including trekker safety, weather conditions, trail recovery, and environmental conservation.
Therefore, if you are planning to hike Mount Rinjani, we recommend choosing a trekking date outside the January–March closure period.
Trekking normally resumes when the National Park Authority officially reopens the mountain for the new trekking season. Opening dates and regulations may vary from year to year, so always check the latest official information before planning your trip.
Please note: Eddie Rinjani Trekking does not operate trekking trips during the official closure period.
