Preparing the right equipment is an important part of having a safe, comfortable, and enjoyable Mount Rinjani trekking experience.
Rinjani has changing weather conditions, steep and rocky terrain, cold temperatures at night, and an especially demanding summit climb. You do not need to bring everything you own—pack smart and bring only the essentials.
Here is our recommended Mount Rinjani trekking packing list.
Essential Trekking Equipment
1. Headlamp
A headlamp is essential for Rinjani trekking, especially if you are climbing the summit before sunrise.
It allows you to keep both hands free while walking on steep and rocky terrain. We recommend bringing spare batteries or ensuring your headlamp is fully charged.
2. Good Hiking Shoes
Choose comfortable, sturdy hiking shoes with good grip.
The Rinjani trail includes rocky, sandy, steep, and uneven sections. Proper hiking shoes can provide better stability and comfort, especially during the summit climb.
3. Comfortable Trekking Clothes
Wear lightweight and breathable clothing during the day.
Quick-drying T-shirts and comfortable trekking shorts or trousers are recommended. Avoid heavy cotton clothing because it can stay wet for a long time when you sweat.
For the summit climb, we recommend wearing longer trousers or suitable trekking pants to protect your legs from cold temperatures and loose volcanic sand.
4. Warm Clothing
Temperatures can become very cold at night, especially around the crater rim and during the summit climb.
We recommend bringing:
- Windproof jacket
- Warm jacket or fleece
- Long trousers
- Warm socks
- Gloves
- Beanie or warm hat
Layering your clothes is usually more practical than bringing one very thick jacket.
5. Gloves
Gloves are highly recommended, especially for the night summit climb.
They help protect your hands from the cold and can also provide additional grip and protection when using trekking poles or navigating rocky sections.
